Huawei and Intel to Cooperate to Build WiMAX Carrier-grade Wireless Broadband Network

China Wireless Forum 2005, Shanghai, CHINA, April 19, 2005 - Huawei Technologies and Intel today announced that they will cooperate in building carrier-grade wireless broadband networks supporting the new WiMAX / IEEE 802.16 standards and specifications.

The two companies will work closely to develop a broad range of new high-speed broadband wireless technologies and lead subsequent developments in the broadband wireless industries.

"We're very pleased to cooperate with Intel to establish carrier-grade wireless broadband networks for global customers. Intel is the world's leading chip maker, and this partnership will speed up the establishment of wireless broadband networks and promote the development of the wireless broadband implementation globally," said Guo Zhiyan, GM, Broadband Wireless Division, Huawei Technologies.

"Cooperation between Intel and top-tier, global leading telecommunications equipment companies like Huawei will drive the development of the WiMAX ecosystem and rollout of the next generation of wireless broadband networks. We look forward to working with Huawei to help make the potential of WiMAX a reality in China, and around the world," said Michael W. Chen, Director, Communications Marketing & Sales for Intel Asia-Pacific.

Huawei is dedicated to the research and development of carrier-grade wireless broadband networks, and established the world's first telecom-grade WiFi network. Huawei has also deployed end-to-end WCDMA, CDMA 2000 and GSM solutions in more than 70 countries throughout the world. In the first quarter of 2005, Huawei successfully developed an HSDPA communications network processor. Huawei will provide global customers with various kinds of wireless broadband networks to satisfy future requirements for broadband access.

Intel has been a leader in the advancement of the IEEE 802.16 "WiMAX" standard for wireless broadband and has developed chipsets and processors to support WiMAX networks. Intel today also announced the launch of its first commercial WiMAX chipset, Intel PRO/Wireless 5116.

Huawei plans to integrate Intel's 802.16-2004 chipsets into carrier-grade broadband network solutions, and roll out the commercial network in the fourth quarter of 2005.
