Intel Launches Research And Development Center In Seoul

SEOUL, March 8, 2004 - Intel Korea today announced the establishment of the Intel Korea Research and Development Center. The R&D center will focus on innovating advanced wireless communications technology, high-quality media coding, and next generation platforms for content distribution and consumption. The center will provide an environment for the technology industry, government, research institutes and Intel to collaborate on new technologies, solutions and standards that accelerate the adoption and integration of technology for consumers.

"Digital technology and the rapid expansion of digital content is changing how people experience entertainment and personal content within the home," said Pat Gelsinger, Intel vice president and chief technology officer. "The Korea R&D center provides a great opportunity for companies and industry to develop exciting new experiences and interoperable products for the worldwide marketplace."

According to the digital home vision, consumers will be able to enjoy content - movies, music, games, photos, communication and information - anytime, any where and on any device. "The technology trends, key standards and new devices will come together here at this R&D center to make this vision a reality," said Gelsinger.

While in Seoul, Gelsinger also signed a memorandum of understanding with Chu-Hwan Yim, president of the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). Intel and ETRI have agreed to jointly develop new technologies related to multi-stream media distribution over home networks, home automation, and next generation home servers.

"ETRI has a proven track record of information technology R&D. We are pleased to work with Intel, the world's leader in the computing and communication industry to develop leading-edge technologies to enable the digital home," said Chu-Hwan Yim.

Gelsinger noted that the Intel Korea R&D Center will foster collaboration among a variety of contributors including the Ministry of Information and Communication, ETRI and Korea's technology industry. "Korea's world-leading broadband and wireless adoption, the government's strong commitment to policies that support the rapid deployment of new communication technologies, and experienced researchers in consumer electronics make Korea a great place for Intel to develop technologies and solutions that will support the convergence of computing and communications," said Gelsinger.

The center will also work with the technology industry on next generation wireless communications technologies, such as Ultra-Wideband, and with the Korean government on spectrum reform issues, holding rapid deployment of new wireless technologies as the goal.

KS Lee is the first director of the Intel Korea R&D Center. Before joining Intel, Lee worked at Samsung Electronics in the Digital Media Network businesses.
