SK Telecom Runs Company Billing System On Intel® Itanium® 2 Processor-Based Servers

SEOUL, South Korea, Nov. 18, 2003 - Intel Corporation today announced that SK Telecom, South Korea's leading wireless telecommunication service provider, has selected Intel® Itanium® 2 processor-based systems to power the company's billing system.

SK Telecom's new billing system is powered by Itanium 2 processor-based HP servers running the Linux* operating system, and supports the nTels Packet Service Gateway (N-PSG*) billing software. The new servers, a migration from a legacy RISC-based system, can process large packets of data from the high-capacity Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN) more quickly and efficiently, with fewer systems and at a lower cost.

"Our previous RISC-based system had limitations in its processing capability and scalability," said JooSik Lee, vice president, Technology Strategy Group, SK Telecom. "We chose Intel's Itanium architecture for its scalability, reliability, and price and performance benefits. It is the most suitable architecture for the high-capacity packet billing system we are developing. The enhanced efficiency and cost savings will ultimately help us to deliver even better service to our subscribers."

"The nTels N-PSG Packet Billing Solution is an ideal billing solution for service providers that have a large subscriber base, a wide range of services and complex billing structures," said Jae Hee Shim, chief executive officer of nTels. "The Itanium 2 processor's high performance, reliability, scalability and superior database management capabilities will help nTels N-PSG demonstrate its efficiency and maximize the benefits that our billing solution can bring to telecom service providers and their subscribers."

"Intel's Itanium architecture addresses the need for faster, more affordable computing solutions," said MC Kim, Intel Korea's country manager. "Itanium 2 processor-based solutions and platforms deliver the performance, scalability, cost-effectiveness and competitive edge that companies need for the success of their businesses today and in the future. Our success with SK Telecom and nTels shows that Itanium is the architecture of choice for large database-related applications and a key ingredient in solutions for the telecommunication industry."
