Intel-Based Servers To Power Shanghai e-Government Network
SHANGHAI, Sept. 3, 2002, CeBIT Asia -- The Yi Dong Network Information Company Ltd. (Yi Dong) and Intel China Ltd (Intel) today announced that the Shanghai e-Government Network will be powered by systems and solutions based on Intel® architecture. Already under construction, the e-Government Network is expected to go live before the end of this year.
The objective of the Shanghai e-Government Network is to enable information sharing and support across more than 300 government organizations in Shanghai in order to increase the efficiency of government administration. Under the project, a consolidated data center will be built to provide smaller departments with data storage services, while larger departments will deploy internal servers directly. During the project planning stage, system integrator Yi Dong also evaluated several proprietary solutions based on RISC architectures, but selected an industry standard Intel architecture solution for its overall system performance, total cost of ownership, time to deployment, ease of maintenance and scalability. The new network will be built using servers powered by the Intel® Xeon™ processor family.
"Intel's open and standards-based architecture allows different server manufacturers, OS developers, and solution providers to offer products on the same architecture, and this brings maximum flexibility for us in building the e-government system," said Zhang Wei-ping, general manager of Yi Dong Network Information Company Ltd. "The systems we selected satisfy the project requirements in overall performance and time to deployment. In addition, there is sufficient headroom for future expansions as demand increases."
An internal test was conducted by Yi Dong during the system selection phase for the Shanghai e-Government Network, proving that multiple applications, including the Oracle 9i database, can run seamlessly on the Intel architecture-based platform.
"Intel is committed to bringing high performance systems and solutions offering flexibility, scalability, fast time to implementation, and leading price/performance to both government and enterprise users," said Ian Yang, country manager for Intel in China. "We applaud the Shanghai government for selecting an industry standard infrastructure that can scale up and scale out to meet the future needs of its many departments."
The government expert committee responsible for the Shanghai e-Government Network strongly endorsed Intel architecture in an Expert Committee statement: "With China entering the WTO, and Shanghai as the financial center and a window to the world for China, decision accuracy and efficiency will become critical for government organizations to increase work efficiency. The e-Government Network based on open standard architecture will provide information sharing and support to the Shanghai government and help us to increase work efficiency."
The Shanghai e-Government Network is now under development and deployment and will be put into operation by the end of this year. With the network ready to use, over 300 government organizations in Shanghai will be able to share information and resources on this unified platform based on Intel architecture.
