Intel Announces Integrated Solution For Migration To IP Telephony

PBX Digital Gateway Easily Works with Leading Products to Offer VoIP Solution in Modular Packet-Based Networks

LOS ANGELES-(INTEL® COMMUNICATIONS TECHSUMMIT 2001)-Oct. 23, 2001- Intel Corporation announced the general availability of the PBX Digital Gateway, which enables organizations to deploy cost-effective Internet Protocol (IP)-based telephony services with their existing telecommunications equipment. This capability reduces equipment replacement costs and the time it takes to deploy features such as transfer, hold, and message waiting indicators to remote locations.

"IP telephony offers significant savings in service fees when compared to traditional telecommunications services; however, the cost of replacing all of the existing telephony equipment with IP telephony equipment is prohibitive for many organizations," said Chris Meszaros, manager of Intel's PBX Gateway product line. "The PBX Digital Gateway provides the critical link, allowing enterprises to migrate to an IP telephony solution at a controlled pace. This protects the value of their existing digital telecom equipment investments, and lowers management and support costs."

The PBX Digital Gateway converts digital signals from existing digital telephone equipment to an industry standard protocol called H.323 that can be transmitted over a company's wide area network (WAN) to communications devices such as IP phones, wireless phones, and IP servers in almost any location. This conversion allows those devices to act as normal extensions of the existing digital telephone network.

To offer enterprises complete, cost-effective converged communications solutions, the PBX Digital Gateway seamlessly interoperates with other IP telephony products from Intel, including the Intel® Internet Phone Software Development Kit and the Intel Converged Communications Platform. The PBX Digital Gateway also supports PBX equipment from leading manufacturers such as Mitel Networks*, Nortel Networks* and Avaya*.

The PBX Digital Gateway is planned to be generally available through Intel distributors in mid-November at a suggested price of $2,730. A full range of technical support and consulting services, sales training and computer-based training on the PBX Digital Gateway are also available from Intel.
