Intel Press Release

Intel Announces Advanced Services DSL Gateway

ATLANTA, June 5, 2001 - Intel Corporation announced today at SUPERCOMM the Intel® AnyPoint™ DSL Gateway 4200, which is designed to simplify customer installation, lower service provider deployment and support costs, and enable remote provisioning of advanced services. The Gateway 4200 is the latest in the AnyPoint family of home and small office connectivity and networking solutions.

The AnyPoint DSL Gateway 4200 simplifies setup and use through Intel® Self Install Technology, which includes Web-based installation wizards and preset service provider deployment models. It integrates an ADSL modem, high-performance router and professional grade firewall all in one product, and supports a wide range of configuration models. The Gateway 4200 hardware and software architecture has been designed for rapid and extensive customization to extend the product lifecycle in field deployment, maximizing service provider customer premises equipment (CPE) return on investment.

The Gateway 4200 incorporates industry standard mini-PCI slots for add-in modules. For example, modules for WAN or LAN access technologies, voice, telemetry, home control and entertainment-specific hardware and software can be designed and implemented to meet the specific requirements of each service provider.

Significant CPU and memory headroom has been designed into the AnyPoint Gateway 4200, allowing service providers the potential to deploy lucrative but CPU and memory-intensive services such as virtual private network (VPN) tunneling and OSGi applications at a later date. In addition, the gateway operating system is an embedded version of Redhat Linux 2.4, providing support for true multi-tasking of complex applications and services including business-class functionality such as ATM and IP quality of service and rapid development of new gateway functionality per service provider requirements over time.

In keeping with Intel's corporate mission, the AnyPoint DSL Gateway 4200 is designed to be a building block for the next generation of revenue generating Internet services. As such, it supports next generation technologies like universal plug and play (UPnP) and ILMI CPE auto-configuration protocols.

"UPnP will help 'demystify' networking for home users," said Greg Lang, Intel's vice president and general manager of the Platform Networking Group. "Future residential gateway products from Intel will enable users to transparently add new devices to their home network and share network resources. Users will be able to easily share a broadband connection between multiple PCs and other connected devices for real time communications, digital entertainment and gaming."

ILMI is a recently approved DSL Forum CPE Auto-Configuration Working Group specification (TR-37) designed to automatically provision basic Internet access remotely from the DSLAM.

The AnyPoint DSL Gateway 4200 provides advanced diagnostics capabilities that allow end users to quickly resolve most problems and give service-provider help-desk technicians the ability to resolve more difficult issues remotely.

Customer security is also a high priority with the AnyPoint Gateway 4200. The product includes a self-configuring, at-the-point-of-the-network firewall that eliminates the need for the customer to purchase, install and manage personal firewall software. The Gateway 4200 also includes a comprehensive set of Application Layer Gateways to automatically enable common Internet applications such as Microsoft NetMeeting and real-time audio and streaming.

The AnyPoint™ DSL Gateway 4200 supports ADSL services based on industry standard DMT protocols and will interoperate with most current and next-generation central office (CO) equipment from leading DSLAM vendors. It is compliant with T1.413i2, ITU G.992.1 (G.dmt) and G.992.2 (G.lite) standards and is compatible with all operating systems.
