Intel Delivers Fastest Mobile Pentium® III Processors Featuring Speedstep(TM) Technology

Intel Mobile Processors Enable Highest Performing Notebooks for Anytime, Anywhere Computing

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 24, 2000 -- Intel Corporation today introduced its highest performance mobile PC processors that will enable today's thinnest, lightest notebook computers. The new mobile Pentium® III processor featuring Intel® SpeedStep™ technology at 700 MHz will power mobile PCs that can deliver desktop-class performance without compromising mobility.

Intel today also announced the new mobile Intel® Celeron® processor at 550 MHz, which delivers an exceptional value for consumers looking to buy a low-cost mobile PC. Both processors are shipping in volume today.

"Mobile Pentium III processor-based systems meet the demands of the new Internet economy by enabling the highest performing mobile PCs on the market today," said Frank Spindler, vice president, and director of marketing of Intel's Mobile Computing Group. "Intel SpeedStep technology provides the ideal combination of instantaneous performance and low power to extend battery life."

Intel SpeedStep Technology
Mobile Pentium III processors featuring Intel SpeedStep technology are designed to deliver desktop-class performance for mobile PCs. The processors can dynamically switch clock frequency and voltage, depending on whether the computer is running on batteries or is plugged into AC power. When running in Battery Optimized Mode, the processors run at a lower frequency and lower voltage (1.35 volts), significantly lowering CPU power consumption while still delivering high performance. When a user plugs into an AC outlet, the notebook can automatically switch to Maximum Performance Mode, increasing the frequency significantly. These changes in frequency happen in only 1/2000th of a second -- so fast, they are invisible to users, even if they occur in the middle of performance-intensive applications, such as playing a DVD movie. Users also have the freedom to select the Maximum Performance Mode even while running on batteries. Making the switch is as easy as clicking an icon at the bottom of the screen, and no reboot is required.

Mobile Processors Designed for Portability
All of Intel's mobile processors are designed specifically for mobile computers. As such, they run at a lower voltage than their desktop counterparts, which helps to save battery life. In addition, mobile Pentium III and Celeron processors implement Intel's Quick Start technology, which can reduce processor power to below 0.5 watts**, further improving battery life. The mobile Pentium III processor 700 MHz featuring Intel SpeedStep technology, like the previously introduced 650/600 MHz, takes advantage of the Intel's low power technologies and consumes less than 2 watts** of average power in Battery Optimized Mode.

Another advantage of Intel mobile processors is that they are significantly smaller than desktop processors, enabling the development of even lighter and thinner mobile computers. In BGA and Micro PGA packaging, Intel mobile processors are the size of a postage stamp and weigh about the same as a nickel.

Processor Specifications and Pricing
Mobile Pentium III processors featuring Intel SpeedStep technology are now offered at speeds of 700, 650 and 600 MHz. The mobile Pentium III processor featuring SpeedStep technology operate at 700 MHz in Maximum Performance Mode and 550 MHz in Battery Optimized Mode. The previously introduced mobile Pentium III processor featuring SpeedStep technology operate at 650/600 MHz in Maximum Performance Mode and 500 in Battery Optimized Mode. All three processors feature a 100 MHz system bus, 256 Kilobyte, full-speed Advanced Transfer Cache, Advanced System Buffering, and Internet Streaming SIMD extensions. These features combine to deliver the highest performance of any mobile processor in the market today.

Mobile Intel Celeron processors are now offered in 550, 500, 466, 450 and 433 MHz. These processors offer a great value for low-cost mobile PCs.

In 1,000 unit quantities, the mobile Pentium III processor at 700 MHz is priced at $562. The mobile Intel Celeron processor 550 MHz is $170 in the same quantities.
