Intel Introduces Fast Ethernet Controller for Embedded Applications

Intel's 82559ER Delivers Industry Leading Performance and Lowest Power While Utilizing Smallest Area of Circuit Board Space

HILLSBORO, Ore., Sept. 29, 1999 - Intel Corporation today announced the 82559ER Fast Ethernet controller. About the size of a dime, the 82559ER combines high performance with the lowest power consumption into the smallest Fast Ethernet controller available in the embedded marketplace. The 82559ER provides a cost-effective solution for high-speed connectivity in non-PC devices such as kiosks, transaction terminals, office printers and Windows* based terminals.

"The days of independent computing are over and people need the flexibility to connect with a greater variety of devices," said Tim Dunn, director of marketing for Intel's Network Interface Division. "As we move toward a world of a billion connected people, the ability to access the Internet from a wider variety of devices becomes increasingly important."

The 82559ER is a second-generation integrated media access controller (MAC) and physical layer (PHY) interface that builds on the success of Intel's 82559 line of components. Intel's 82559ER enables Fast Ethernet migration without compromising space or power limitations and is a derivative of the popular Intel 82559 PCI controller used by top tier PC OEMs.

The 82559ER allows additional space on the board for periphery components so designers will have more room to develop additional features. With the rise in demand for smaller and faster devices, Intel's 82559ER will help enable system designers to develop a wide array of non-PC devices to meet that demand.

In the embedded market, power consumption plays a large role in the design of new products. Because the 82559ER consumes little power (125mA typical at 3.3V), it is ideal for non-PC devices requiring extended battery life or power for other components.
