Intel Introduces Iometer, Server I/O Performance Measurement Tool
Iometer Software Available at Intel Developers Forum and at Intel Web Site
SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 17, 1998 -- Intel Corporation today announced at the Intel Developers Forum (IDF) the availability of Iometer, a new server I/O performance storage measurement tool that Intel is distributing at no charge to server system developers at IDF and via the Intel Web site. Iometer provides a simple way to gauge server I/O performance and reliably compare results with those obtained from other server tests conducted in other labs using Iometer.
"Server I/O performance is a critical gate for improving the overall performance of Servers," said Ahmet Houssein, marketing manager, Intel's Enterprise Server Group. "While there are several very good proprietary I/O performance testing tools available, developers cannot reliably compare results obtained from different tools. We wanted to create a simple and free tool that would allow widespread testing and comparison of Intel servers."
Iometer is both a workload generator and a performance measurement tool. Iometer simulates workloads to stress the I/O subsystem in specific ways. Under a simulated workload, Iometer gathers data such as throughput, latency, and CPU utilization. By running the same workload on multiple system configurations, users can determine the optimum configuration. Iometer can generate and measure loads on single or multiple (networked) systems.
