Intel Press Release

Intel Announces Scalable Switch Solutions for Campus Environments

HILLSBORO, Ore., Feb. 24, 1998 Intel Corporation today introduced its first stackable, scalable, layer 3 switches designed to provide more comprehensive solutions for campus networking environments. The Intel Express 550T and 550F Routing Switches are compatible with Intel's Express 510T Switch for workgroups and, when stacked, provide incremental speed and capacity similar to traditional chassis switching and routing solutions, at a fraction of the cost and complexity. Increasing performance while reducing complexity and total cost of ownership is key to Intel's plans for its networking business.

"The scalability provided with our new switch products enables network administrators to easily reconfigure their network at a moment's notice as new employees, applications and equipment are added," said Frank Gill, executive vice president and general manager of Intel's Small Business and Networking Group. "In addition, we are supplying the 10/100 Mbps (megabits per second) solutions you need today, and support Gigabit Ethernet tomorrow."

The scalability of Intel's 500 family of switches provides companies significant savings by enabling them to easily expand their networks through stacking and an easy migration path to Gigabit Ethernet in the future. All of Intel's stackable hub, switch and router products are easily configured and managed through Intel Device View management software.

Intel's new line of switch products with Scalable Stacking Technology are specifically designed for the campus environment, which is generally comprised of several hundred to several thousand users located within a group of buildings or floors and connected to a Local Area Network (LAN). The outstanding routing performance found in these layer 3 devices is especially important to campus environment customers who are seeking the additional speed and control not found in standard layer 2 switch products. The Intel Express 500 series of switches, when coupled with Intel's line of infrastructure, server and management products provide a comprehensive set of solutions for the evolving campus environment.

Intel Device View
Intel Device View, which enables easy Web and Windows*-based management and support for nine groups of RMON (Remote Monitoring), is included with the purchase of the Intel Express 550T and 55F Routing switch products. Intel Device View for the Web allows customers to administer Intel Express hubs, switches and routers from virtually any networked PC, reducing the need for on-site, physical diagnosis of problems or usage. This intuitive software package simplifies the management of Intel's networking devices through its remote management capability, saving network administrators considerable time and effort. Intel Device View, combined with Intel's LANDesk® management software, helps provide network administrators several viable options for managing the campus networking environment.

Delivering comprehensive networking solutions using industry standards-based technology is a key element of Intel's strategy of enabling the transition to higher-bandwidth networking and reducing the total cost of ownership.
