Intel Press Release

Intel LANDesk Server Manager Pro v6 Helps Increase Server Uptime

HILLSBORO, Ore., Oct. 30, 1998 - Intel Corporation today announced a new release of its LANDesk Server Manager Pro product, which helps to dramatically reduce the cost of maintaining server health. Intel LANDesk Server Manager Pro v6 provides the ability to monitor critical server health and performance parameters, diagnose and repair problems, and monitor server capacity trends, all via a LAN or remote connection.

"The ability to monitor, repair and enhance the performance of network servers is more critical to today's companies than ever before," said Richard Villars, International Data Corporation (IDC). "When server management solutions like Intel LANDesk Server Manager Pro are effectively implemented, companies can see more than a 60 percent annual decrease in downtime for each user."

A recent study conducted by IDC found that, on average, solutions that minimize server downtime - such as Intel LANDesk Server Manager Pro - pay for themselves after just 92 days. The return on investment consisted of cost savings for user productivity, downtime savings, management efficiency and management productivity that totaled $600,968 annually per 100 users.*

Designed for servers based on the Intel Architecture, Intel LANDesk Server Manager Pro is the only server vendor-independent, integrated hardware and software server management solution available on the market today. LANDesk Server Manager Software provides trending data, server diagnostics and real-time monitoring to assist LAN administrators in proactively managing, repairing and enhancing the performance of Microsoft Windows NT** and Novell NetWare** servers.

With many remote servers operated from central data centers, LAN administrators are often away when their servers crash or exceed defined operating parameters. When visiting a server site is inconvenient or impossible, Intel LANDesk Server Manager Pro provides the remote management capabilities necessary to get that server up and running from any remote location with access to the server via network or telephone line.

The Emergency Management Card (EMC) is a critical part of the Intel LANDesk Server Manager Pro solution. The card included in version 6 is an all-new PCI card designed to provide ease of installation with the PCI slots that are prevalent in many server vendors' systems. The EMC comes with an integrated Intel 56-K modem and 100-Mb Ethernet connection to provide customers with emergency alerting, remote control and on-board temperature and voltage monitoring over a telephone line or private LAN. The addition of the Ethernet capability is designed to allow administrators to manage and even reboot groups of remote servers with a single phone line, eliminating the need to install a dedicated phone line for every managed server.

"Intel's LANDesk Server Manager Pro addresses one of the most expensive issues faced by network administrators: the high cost of tuning and recovering a remotely-located server," said David Rowe, director of marketing for Intel's Systems Management Division. "With this product, IT administrators can respond to server problems in real time from virtually anywhere."

Intel's LANDesk Server Manager Software v6 can also be purchased without the EMC, providing a software-only solution for proactive monitoring and problem resolution on servers across a LAN. In addition, LANDesk Server Manager Software v6 can manage the EMCs purchased with previous versions of LANDesk Server Manager Pro.

Intel's LANDesk Server Manager products support Intel's Wired for Management initiative to help reduce the total cost of business computing without sacrificing the benefits of high-performance PCs and servers. Intel's server management products also comply with the Desktop Management Interface (DMI) 2.0 specification, which enables provision of valuable information to help LAN administrators manage their networks.

The Intel LANDesk Server Manager v6 products are available today through a worldwide network of distributors and value-added resellers. LANDesk Server Manager v6 products are also distributed by select server manufacturers including Fujitsu, Hitachi, NCR and Toshiba.

Intel LANDesk Server Manager Pro v6 has a suggested list price of $995 (U.S.). Customers of any previous LANDesk Server Manager product may upgrade to the hardware-software product for $695. LANDesk Server Manager Software v6 has a suggested list price of $495 (U.S.), and customers of any previous version can upgrade for $249.
