Intel to License NetManage, Inc. Technology That Runs "Always On/Dynamic ISDN" on Standard PCs
HILLSBORO, Ore., March 24, 1998 -- Intel Corporation announced today that it will license a key piece of networking technology that gives personal computers in homes or other remote locations access to "Always On/Dynamic ISDN" (AO/DI), a new communications standard that helps reduce congestion on networks operated by Internet service providers and local telephone companies.
The networking technology was designed by software developer NetManage, Inc. to operate over ITK Telecommunications ISDN hardware and software, which are included in the Intel Business Video Conferencing with ProShare® Technology product. The networking technology configures PCs for Internet access over the new AO/DI standard, advanced by The Vendor's ISDN Association, Inc.
AO/DI uses ISDN's D Channel to establish a constant low-bandwidth connection between the user, their Internet service provider, a corporate network or the other end of a video conference call. When the user needs more bandwidth to complete a specific task -- such as sending an e-mail message or downloading information from the Internet -- the connection switches to the higher-speed B Channel. When the task is completed, the connection moves back to the lower-speed D Channel.
Intel plans to license the technology for use in current and future products developed for transmission over the dial-up H.323 (LAN) communication standard. AO/DI is a good bridge between the H.320 (ISDN) video conferencing widely used by most businesses today and the rapidly emerging H.323 (LAN) video conferencing standard.
Scott Darling, general manager of the Intel Business Communication Products Operation, said AO/DI gives businesses the advantage of ISDN dial-up network access and H.323 performance without losing the ability to contact H.320 video conferencing systems.
"Even when connected to an H.320 video conference call, a user still has access to a corporate network through an ISDN line's D channel," Darling said.
Intel's announcement follows a successful technical trial completed in October by BellSouth at its Solutions Validation Test Lab in Birmingham, Ala. BellSouth tested AO/DI capabilities with NetManage software and ITK Telecommunications ISDN hardware and software. BellSouth has endorsed as AO/DI as a more effective means for business customers to connect to the Internet and intranet from home or remote locations.
