Intel Press Release

Intel and PLATINUM technology Deliver New Version of LANDesk Configuration Manager

Companies Collaborate to Introduce Standalone Software Product That Can Be Installed on New or Existing Intel-based Servers

HILLSBORO, Ore., March 3, 1998 -- Intel Corporation and PLATINUM technology, inc. (NASDAQ:PLAT) today announced a new version of LANDesk Configuration Manager, a desktop configuration management software solution. LANDesk Configuration Manager helps network administrators lower the total cost of business computing by automating the complete, centralized configuration of business PCs. It also helps manage the PC configuration lifecycle -- from installation through retirement.

Previously sold by Intel as an integrated hardware/software package, the new version is a software product that can be installed on new and existing Intel-based servers. This new release is the first product to result from the development and marketing agreement announced by Intel and PLATINUM in December 1997. The product will be sold through PLATINUM's direct and indirect sales channels and will be re-licensed by Intel to be sold through Intel's indirect channels.

"Organizations face a growing challenge as they undertake staged or wholesale migrations to new operating systems and applications on networked PCs. They want to complete this migration as quickly and inexpensively as possible, but they also want to take advantage of this opportunity to ensure that users are working with standard desktop configurations and software," said Richard Villars, director of Networking Software research at International Data Corp. "Products such as LANDesk Configuration Manager enable IS organizations, distributors and systems integrators to more quickly and cost-effectively make the shift from 16-bit to 32-bit architectures while at the same time laying a foundation for reduced help desk support costs and maximized user productivity." IDC estimates there will be more than 5 million Intel-based servers installed worldwide by the end of 1998 and that 1998 shipments of new Intel-based desktop PCs will exceed 63 million -- indicating a significant potential market for LANDesk Configuration Manager.

"LANDesk Configuration Manager is the ideal migration tool for independent systems integrators," said Ed Ekstrom, vice president and general manager of Intel's System Management Division. "LANDesk Configuration Manager continues to evolve as an effective tool to drive down the cost of deploying and managing networked PCs."

"Today's announcement reinforces PLATINUM's philosophy of allowing customers to buy what they need, when they need it," said Marty Leamy, senior vice president of PLATINUM's systems management division. "Unbundling the LANDesk Configuration Manager software from the hardware allows current and future users of Intel-based architectures to experience the cost savings achieved by automating the deployment of operating systems and applications across the network to desktop PCs. Because the product was previously only sold with new Intel-based hardware, there are now millions of customers with installed Intel-based servers who can benefit from the standalone version."

PLATINUM plans to include LANDesk Configuration Manager technology in ProVision, PLATINUM's recently released suite of integrated systems and database management solutions. ProVision currently addresses seven key IT management disciplines: job management, performance management, software distribution, problem resolution, security, database utilities, and database management. Through ProVision, PLATINUM will build an extensive desktop management solution that allows organizations to tightly control the software, hardware, and staff productivity issues that contribute to the total cost of computing.

LANDesk Configuration Manager v1.50.2 is fully compliant with the Network PC System Design Guidelines and supports the DMI 2.0 (Desktop Management Interface) specification and all PCs that are compliant with the Intel Wired For Management (WfM) Baseline Specification. The WfM specification is designed to help manufacturers provide a wide range of business PCs that can be effectively managed over the network.

"LANDesk Configuration Manager 1.50.2 extends Compaq's industry-leading Intelligent Manageability initiative by providing centralized, remote deployment of operating systems and applications on our managed Deskpro PCs and our Deskpro 4000N Net PC," said Tim Harris, Vice President, Compaq Computer Corporation. "LANDesk Configuration Manager includes Remote System Installation, a feature of Intel's Wired for Management (WfM) baseline specification, which is also a key component of Compaq's Intelligent Manageability. Compaq supports this initial software-based offering of LANDesk Configuration Manager on SmartStart, Compaq's server software integration tool, to ensure optimal configuration and simplified setup on Compaq's industry-leading servers."
