Intel Delivers Web-based Management for Print Servers

HILLSBORO, Ore., Sept. 15, 1997 -- Intel Corporation today released a software upgrade for its print servers that delivers web-based management, an enhanced Windows*-based interface and significant speed improvements. The new capabilities will help users more efficiently configure and maintain NetportExpress™ PRO/100 and NetportExpress PRO Print Servers. The new release provides users with two new interface options: the new Web Netport Manager and a 32-bit version of the Windows-based Netport Manager.

The Web Netport Manager allows for easy configuration of Intel's print servers and provides simple, remote management from standard web browsers. The remote access provided by the Web Netport Manager offers network administrators increased flexibility, enabling them to manage Intel print servers from any Internet or intranet connection. The software release includes an embedded web server which helps control cost of ownership by eliminating the need for additional hardware or software installations.

The 32-bit Windows-based Netport Manager offers an enhanced interface with a new Windows 95 and Windows NT look and feel, which provides a faster, more intuitive interface for busy network administrators. New tools guide users through a simple configuration process regardless of the network environment.

Both user interfaces allow access to the print servers' bi-directional capabilities, making front panel messages such as Paper Out, Toner Low, Printer Off-line and other information available to the remote user without frequent troubleshooting trips to the printer.

In addition, this release provides increased printing throughput of up to 300 kilobytes per second (KBps). The notable speed improvement helps meet the growing demands for printing complex, graphically intensive files.

"Network administrators need flexible printing solutions that are cost-effective and easy to manage," said Mark Christensen, vice president of Intel's Internet and Communications Group and general manager of the Network Products Division. "The combination of Fast Ethernet capability, web-based management and the enhanced Windows interface enables NetportExpress print servers to meet the growing customer demands for increased speed and remote management."

Enabling efficient network printing is a key element of Intel's strategy of delivering 10/100 Mbps networking solutions for high-performance PCs. Intel's family of networking products includes adapters, hubs, switches and routers as well as the NetportExpress family of print servers.

Intel's complete line of print servers is compatible with nearly any printer and supports all major network operating systems including Windows 95, Windows NT, NetWare*, UNIX* and AppleTalk*. Both the new Web Netport Manager and the Windows Netport Manager are backwards compatible with all existing NetportExpress PRO/100 and NetportExpress PRO Print Servers.
