Intel Helps Reduce Server Downtime with Enhanced Management Capabilities

LANDesk Server Manager v3.0 Products Simplify and Extend Proactive Health Monitoring and Server Performance Tracking

HILLSBORO, Ore., Oct. 8, 1997 – Intel Corporation announced today Intel LANDesk Server Manager Pro v3.0 and Intel LANDesk Server Manager Software v3.0, new versions of Intel's solution for maximizing server uptime. This release offers features to proactively monitor server health and performance, including increased reporting and alerting capabilities, improved remote control performance and new launch capabilities for integration with leading enterprise management consoles.

Developed to address the needs of LAN administrators who manage business-critical servers based on Intel Architecture, LANDesk Server Manager Software v3.0 is a software-only solution that enables remote control of live network servers. LANDesk Server Manager Pro v3.0 is an integrated hardware/software product that expands on LANDesk Server Manager's capabilities with an added emergency management card, allowing remote control of both live and crashed servers. Both products work in a multi-NOS environment and provide support for Microsoft Windows NT* and Novell NetWare* servers.

"With newly enhanced management, monitoring and reporting functions, these products offer comprehensive tools to reduce server downtime and the accompanying support costs. They are the newest members of the LANDesk family of products, which allows companies to cost-effectively deploy, manage and protect networked PCs and servers."

LANDesk Server Manager products help IT administrators employ real-time remote monitoring and alerting to assist in addressing problems that often result in server crashes. The software's alert handlers allow administrators to set automatic server responses to specifically defined problems and receive server health alerts via e-mail, pager or pop-up boxes on the LANDesk Server Manager console. For example, if server utilization reaches a predefined maximum, an automatic page would alert the IT manager to address the problem in order to reduce the risk of a server crash.

With health monitoring that now includes seven preset diagnostic report formats, both LANDesk Server Manager products let customers quickly assess and respond to problems. Administrators can also capture and graph servers' operating characteristics over time, enabling them to facilitate improved network reliability and performance through capacity planning based on the collected data. This latest release also brings a new graph controller, easier installation and simplified navigation to both products.

The inclusion of American Power Conversion's (APC) Power Xtend* plug-in consolidates server and UPS management functions by allowing administrators to monitor and take control of APC Smart-UPS* and Matrix-UPS* products directly through the LANDesk Server Management console. This addition of extended management of uninterruptible power supplies now enables LANDesk Server Management products to monitor and alert on three major causes of server downtime: power outages, temperature problems and server NOS crashes.

The LANDesk Server Manager v3.0 products support Intel's Wired for Management initiative to reduce the total costs of business computing without sacrificing the benefits of high-performance PCs and servers. The server management products also comply with the Desktop Management Interface (DMI) 2.0 specification, which enables provision of valuable information to help LAN administrators manage their networks.

LANDesk Server Manager Pro v3.0 and LANDesk Server Manager Software v3.0 have a projected availability of early November. LANDesk Server Manager Pro v3.0 is priced at $1,495 (U.S.) suggested list. Customers of any previous LANDesk Server Manager software version may upgrade to the hardware-software product for $995. LANDesk Server Manager Software v3.0 (software only) has a suggested list price of $695 (U.S.), and customers of any previous version can upgrade for $349.
