Intel Enhances Network Virus Protection With Unified, Multi-NOS Solution

HILLSBORO, Ore., August 4, 1997 -- Intel Corporation today introduced LANDesk Virus Protect v5.0, the first product to offer unified Windows* NT and Novell NetWare* client and server protection that can be managed from a single screen. New features include a single-box, integrated solution for client and server protection, multilayer virus detection and multilayer data protection.

Additional new features of LANDesk Virus Protect v5.0 include centralized configuration of scan parameters for all servers and Windows clients within a domain from a single screen, a one-button virus sweep of all servers and clients within a domain, and client lock-down capabilities to ensure that workstations maintain their defined state of virus protection readiness. National Computer Security Association (NCSA) certification helps ensure comprehensive virus protection throughout the domain.

LANDesk Virus Protect v5.0 also features automatic updates of virus pattern files to help ensure the product remains up-to-date and addresses the increasing volume of virus threats. These updates are quickly, easily and automatically deployed throughout the network. Administrators need only to configure the settings once to be confident the product maintains a constant state of readiness.

LANDesk Virus Protect v5.0 provides three separate layers of protection for Intel processor-based servers:

  • Real-time background scanning of incoming data provides continual detection of known and unknown viruses and prevents infected files from being copied to servers or workstations.
  • An integrity shield prevents file modification and deletion by securing executable files with write-protection.
  • Integrity verification scans modified files to limit virus propagation.

This multilayer protection model provides a virus barrier that both detects viruses and reduces the risk of spreading them. LANDesk Virus Protect v5.0 continues the work of Intel's Wired for Management initiative to reduce the costs of maintaining high-performance PC networks by minimizing costly virus intrusions, preventing the spread of virus infections across the enterprise and maximizing network uptime.

"IT organizations face a growing threat from aggressive computer viruses at a time when many are migrating from one operating system to another," said Ed Ekstrom, vice president of Intel's Internet and Communications Group and general manager of the Systems Management Division. "LANDesk Virus Protect v5.0 provides a single, integrated anti-virus solution for clients and servers, whether they're running NetWare, Windows NT or both."

Centralized Management
LANDesk Virus Protect v5.0 provides sophisticated end-to-end management throughout servers, desktops and remote users from a single management console. Centralized management and domain configuration simplify installation, updates and ongoing maintenance. This centralized management works across multiple platforms, including Windows 95, Windows 3.1x , NetWare Server, Windows NT Workstation, Windows NT Server, and DOS*.

LANDesk Virus Protect v5.0 now includes the reporting and alerting features of LANDesk Management Suite, allowing LAN administrators to proactively monitor virus activity, isolate problem areas and take corrective action. The new, centralized server-based alerting enables LAN administrators to set up appropriate responses to detected viruses, such as send an e-mail, set SNMP traps or call a beeper.

The new software also generates detailed, graphical information that integrates enterprise-wide data and enables LAN administrators to track events, identify unprotected systems and detect users who have introduced viruses.

Pricing and Availability
Intel LANDesk Virus Protect v5.0, available in early August and priced at $1,495, includes licenses for one server and unlimited connected clients, including mobile and remote users. New server-only and client-only products are also being introduced at the same time to support small businesses and highly distributed organizations.
