Intel Unveils New Multimedia Software for Internet Web Pages

New Intel Software Included in Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4.0 Preview 2

HILLSBORO, Ore., Aug. 5, 1997 - Intel today introduced three new software technologies that create special graphic effects and advanced audio and video capabilities for the web. Realistic, animated effects, such as running water and burning flames, high-quality audio compression for music and voice, and scaleable video capabilities are now available for creating more engaging web pages. The beta versions of Intel's new software are now shipping in the latest preview release of Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4.0 browser. These new technologies are the latest step in Intel's strategy for delivering advanced multimedia software for developers of PC applications and content.

The software Intel introduced today include:

  • Intel Web Design Effects software, for rich, animated Internet special effects
  • Intel Indeo® video software 5.0, the latest enhancement to Intel's Indeo video family, providing high-quality scaleable video for the Internet
  • Intel Indeo® audio software, the newest member of the Intel Indeo technology family, delivering high-quality compressed audio for the Internet

"Web pages on connected PCs truly come alive with Intel's new Web Design Effects software and new Indeo video and audio software," said Gerald Holzhammer, director of the Intel Architecture Labs. "This is another example of Intel's continued commitment to provide key multimedia building blocks to PC application developers."

Intel's Web Design Effects software includes procedural textures technology which enables web authors to create lifelike graphic effects that immediately display over the Internet. The technology delivers artistic animation controls to create running water, floating clouds and other effects on web pages. Now it is easy to create rich animated effects that previously required skilled PC graphics animators. The software uses the PC's processing power to produce the graphic effects, rather than sending multiple images over the Internet. When experienced on a PC with an Intel PentiumO processor, the animation designed with this new software immediately creates dynamic colors, shapes and sizes from a single bitmap.

Intel's new Indeo video software 5.0 delivers advanced video capabilities that adjust video quality according to the size of the connection to the Internet. PC users can view videos quickly from the web, select the level of quality, and download and save high-quality video files using the new Intel Indeo video software progressive download technology.

Intel's new Indeo audio software delivers advanced audio compression capabilities achieving up to an 8:1 ratio, with no appreciable loss in quality. This makes rich delivery of high-quality sound over the Internet a reality.
