New Pentium OverDrive Processors with MMX Technology Offer Consumers Wide Variety of Upgrade Options
FOLSOM, Calif., Aug. 4, 1997 -- Intel Corporation today announced the addition of a 200- and 180-MHz Pentium® OverDrive® processor with MMX™ technology to its family of upgrade processors. The new 200-MHz Pentium OverDrive processor with MMX technology for upgradeable 100-, 133- and 166-MHz Pentium processor-based PCs and the 180-MHz Pentium OverDrive Processor with MMX technology for existing 90-, 120- and 150-MHz Pentium processor-based PCs offer consumers a choice of affordable upgrade options to Intel's MMX media enhancement technology.
Available today, the 200- and 180-MHz Pentium OverDrive processors with MMX technology deliver higher levels of processor performance for running existing software applications and even better performance using media-rich applications designed to take advantage of Intel's MMX technology. Software developed with MMX technology delivers such features as vivid colors, full-screen video and graphics, real-time animation and manipulation of images, and 3-D audio, providing consumers with a lifelike PC experience.

MMX Technology Performance -- Right Out of the Box
Intel's 200- and 180-MHz Pentium OverDrive processors with MMX technology carry a manufacturer's suggested list price of $349 and $299, respectively. The new OverDrive processors ship with a CD-ROM sampler featuring a free, a full-version software application designed for MMX technology so PC users can immediately take advantage of the performance boost and enhanced graphics capabilities right out of the box. In addition to the free application, titled Rebel Moon Rising by Ferris Wolf, for a limited time Intel is offering purchasers of the Pentium OverDrive processor with MMX technology the choice of a second, free MMX technology title (plus shipping and handling for $6.95).
Technical and Performance Details The 200-MHz Pentium OverDrive processor with MMX technology provides upgradeable 100-, 133-, and 166-MHz Pentium processor-based PCs with up to a 75 percent performance boost depending on the application and specific processor upgrade. Additionally, overall performance improvements for Pentium OverDrive processors with MMX technology range from 65 percent to 143 percent using the Norton Media Benchmark. This benchmark, which tests the multimedia capabilities of your system and includes MMX technology code, consists of audio, video, imaging, CD and 3-D geometry components.
Compatibility and Support
The Pentium OverDrive processor with MMX technology is supported by an installation manual, diagnostics disk and toll-free technical support. By offering a single-chip approach to processor upgrades, the Pentium OverDrive processor ensures quick and easy end-user installation for a worry-free upgrade to higher levels of system performance.
In addition to the new 200- and 180-MHz Pentium OverDrive processors with MMX technology, Intel continues to offer Pentium OverDrive processors with MMX technology to meet the price/performance requirements of a variety of businesses and consumers. The 166-MHz Pentium OverDrive processor with MMX technology is available for a manufacturer's suggested list price of $219 for upgrading existing 100- and 133-MHz upgradable Pentium processor-based PCs. The 166-MHz Pentium OverDrive processor with MMX technology can also be used to upgrade existing 75- and 90-MHz Pentium processor-based upgradable systems to 125- and 150-MHz, respectively. For i486™ processor- and 60- and 66-MHz Pentium processor-based PCs, Intel continues to offer the Pentium OverDrive processor family.
