Intel Discloses the Name of Its Next Processor Targeted at the Business Market Segment

Intel disclosed the name of its next processor targeted at the business market segment. The name is Pentium® II processor, known until now by the code name Klamath. Pentium II processors combine the benefits of the Pentium Pro processor with Intel's MMX™ media enhancement technology.

Pentium II processor-based systems will be available in the first half of this year.

Pentium II processors will be offered in an innovative packaging design called Single Edge Contact cartridge, or S.E.C. cartridge. This new package design will allow Intel to continue to offer higher and higher performance processors in the coming years.

Why did you name your next product "Pentium II processor?"
The Pentium and Pentium Pro trademarks have acquired a great deal of equity among PC buyers. The Pentium II name builds on that equity. The II element of the name indicates a significant step in the development of the Intel processor architecture, which combines the benefits of the Pentium Pro processor with MMX media enhancement technology.

Why are you disclosing the Pentium II brand now?
We are disclosing the brand now in order to give OEM's and ISV's time to prepare promotional, packaging and other collateral materials to support the product introduction later in the first half of 1997.
