Intel Press Release

MTV And Intel Create New Interactive Experience For Music Fans

Intercast™ Programming Available on MTV and M2 Beginning April 11

NEW YORK/LAS VEGAS, April 7, 1997 – MTV: Music Television, a unit of Viacom Inc., and Intel Corporation will bring music fans a new interactive broadcast experience, the two companies announced today. Beginning April 11, MTV will utilize Intel Intercast™ technology two hours daily around music video programming. On the same day, M2, MTV's newly launched sister network, will begin 24-hour- a-day Intercast programming.

Intercast technology brings television programming and related web content together on the personal computer. Music fans with Intercast technology-enhanced Pentium® processor-based PC's will be able to watch music video programming on MTV or M2 while simultaneously receiving the "Intercast Jam."

"This is true convergence," commented Matt Farber, senior vice president, Programming Enterprises/New Business, MTV. "It's the music fan getting a combined television and interactive online experience on one machine." Farber added, "There is clearly a strong relationship between music, the MTV audience, and new technology. The MTV and M2 audiences are the first generation to really grow up with computers -- they're buying PCs, they're building the Internet, and they're going online every day. They are equally passionate about music, and they have embraced new technology as a means to connect further with the music they love."

"'Intercast Jam' on MTV is music for the PC Generation," said Ron Whittier, senior vice president and general manager, Intel Content Group. "This is a compelling example of creative programming for the PC, the receiver of digital broadcasting (DTV) content in the future."

The "Intercast Jam"
During the "Intercast Jam" on MTV and M2, viewers will be able to interact with Intercast content that is specific and relevant to each particular video or artist. With this technology, while watching the broadcast music video on the PC, the user can read recent news about the artist, get current tour and album release information, and peruse historical and biographical information about the artist. In addition, viewers can link to interactive MTV Online content on the web relating to that artist, including live polls, chat rooms, and other community and purchasing applications. The "Intercast Jam" and the user's experience will change and evolve with each new video played on-air.

Advertising
Today's announcement is part of an earlier announced relationship between MTV and Intel that includes on-air and online advertising. In a related announcement, Gateway2000 announced today that it will make Intercast technology available in selected models of its desktop line of personal computers beginning April 14. Gateway will be promoting its Intercast technology-enabled PC through on-air advertising and product placement on MTV.
