Intel 5G Vision: Cloud to Network to Edge

5G is an interesting technology because what most people are accustomed to with advances in technology is smart phones and advances in mobility. What’s amazing about 5G is that it’s the first wireless technology defined beyond mobility—enabling untethered, wireless use cases. 5G opens doors to new pathways for innovation. A great example is ride-sharing applications. Ten years ago, there wasn’t ...the ability to, on-demand, call up to the cloud, match make with drivers, and get a ride. Now we can rely on wireless technology and the cloud working together to match make a need with a service. By working together, 5G and cloud technologies enable new capabilities. Network modernization is a key component to unlocking innovation in services and application development. Meanwhile, virtual cloud environments can enable matchmaking of services worldwide in ways that couldn’t be connected prior to the advent of today’s transformed networks. One of the exciting opportunities for parallel build out of 5G and edge compute is that many of the immersive use cases are starting to emerge at the enterprise. We can see this in industrial and manufacturing environments with the use of connected wearables that enable augmented experiences for workers. Immersive media with 5G, delivered at the edge, offers the ability to get a real-time feed for a 3D model in an environment where workers are already donning connected wearables. It also eliminates the need to stop and flip through manuals when you’re wearing goggles that enable you to view a 3D model to understand what needs to be repaired and how to do it. It can also provide rich training opportunities since VR can provide more depth than what’s available on a 2D page. Having cloud everywhere is really an opportunity when there’s a common approach to how an infrastructure is managed. A general-purpose platform can have the ability to be tuned across the entire end-to-end spectrum. That enables the re-use of tools, orchestration, and management capabilities from end to end. Intel’s unique role in the data-centric era, that is also aligning with 5G, enables partnerships at the direct level, working with customers on compute, storage, and data movement. It also means teaming up on network build out with communications service providers, and cloud service providers, so they can have a more cohesive service that is seamless—from edge to network to cloud.
