Exploring 5G Experiences with the Intel® 5G Mobile Trial Platform
The Intel® 5G Mobile Trial Platform (MTP) is helping manufacturers, operators, and other ecosystem players from around the globe to become agile in addressing emerging requirements for the Internet of Things (IoT), enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), and Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC). Launched in 2016, Intel’s 5G MTP was the first widely available trialing platform and has been key to setting standards and driving the industry closer to commercialization. Intel has used its cutting edge MTP to bring 5G out of the lab, previewing new 5G technology to the world, one trial at a time.
Delivering Immersive Experiences
Intel worked with AT&T, Ericsson, and Fox Sports to stream portions of the 2018 US Open using 4K HDR cameras positioned at the 7th hole, the trickiest on the course. Intel’s 5G MTP provided 5G network connectivity allowing event organizers to capture incredible content while cutting cumbersome cords.
Powering the 5G Future
Intel and its partners introduced the first broad-scale 5G network at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018. The deployment allowed spectators both inside and outside the sporting venues to experience 5G next-generation services powered by Intel 5G technology for the first time—including time-sliced video,
Collaborating with Partners
Intel, Telstra, and Ericsson conducted one of the world’s first eSports professional gaming experiences over a live, ultra-low-latency 5G connection on Australia’s Gold Coast. The trial was conducted at the 2018 Intel® Extreme Masters event in Sydney, where professional gamers experienced a wired-like experience over wireless.
Evolving Business Verticals
Intel partnered with Foxconn Technology Group and Asia Pacific Telecom in the first public showcase of facial recognition technology based on a Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) 5G solution, demonstrating how retailers can offer customers new shopping experiences.
Intel participated in testing with China Mobile, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), and Ericsson to complete first 5G 3.5GHz multi-vendor end-to-end interoperability test in Beijing, China. The trial utilized Ericsson’s 5G radio testbed and Intel’s 5G MTP, demonstrating excellent performance and stability.
Intel partnered with Huawei for the first public demonstration of 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) New Radio (NR) over the air interoperability, using the 3GPP mid-point release standards. This trial leveraged Huawei’s 5G base station prototype and Intel’s 5G MTP to test 5G NR across the sub-6GHz spectrum band and the higher-range millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum bands.
