Troubleshooting Wizard for Intel® Memory and Storage Tool (GUI)

Pages

Welcome to the Troubleshooting Wizard for Intel® Memory and Storage Tool (GUI).

Important Note: Before proceeding, we recommend that you backup all data with your preferred third-party cloning or migration software to copy the data from one drive to another

Thank you for using this troubleshooting wizard to resolve the problem!

We recommend you check Intel's support website first whenever you need assistance with an Intel product.

Secure Erase issue

Additional Self help resources are available in the support product pages or you can contact Intel Customer Support for assistance.

It is recommended to review the Intel® Memory and Storage Tool Installation Guide available on the tool download page. This guide describes known limitations and issues that may assist in resolving this issue.

After reviewing and following the Installation Guide, is the issue resolved?
Yes
No

These are the requirements that must be met for this Intel SSD Optimizer functionality to be supported:

  • Microsoft Windows* 8.1 or 10
  • SSD isn't part of a storage space
  • If the drive contains the PCIe* NVMe* interface the Intel® NVMe driver is installed and supported
    Notes:
    • For Intel® SSDs the model number will have a ‘p’ at the end. One exception is the Intel® SSD 750 Series, which is also a PCIe NVMe drive.
    • Although the Intel® SSD 600p series and Intel® SSD 670p Series are an NVMe device, these drives are not supported in the Intel® NVMe driver. So this functionality is unavailable
  • Intel® Optane™ memory media based products are not supported as they do not require TRIM actions to be done and are not supported in the Intel® NVMe driver
  • Drive must have a partition (Partition must be assigned a drive letter)
  • File system must be NTFS
  • Drive must have > 1GB of free space
  • VSS must be disabled

If the drive is part of a RAID volume, the following conditions must also be met:

  • The volume must consist of Intel® drives only
  • Only Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 are supported
  • Must not be a SAS_RAID_TYPE_0
  • Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) driver is version greater than version 11.x
  • RAID volume must be in a healthy state
  • Can't run on a ‘member’ of a RAID volume - only on the volume as a whole
Does your computer meet all the requirements?
Yes
No

Important Note
Secure Erase is an unrecoverable operation that permanently deletes all data on an Intel SSD. Secure Erase eliminates not only the user data section of the SSD, but also the reserve data area, rendering data remnants virtually unrecoverable. Once you run Secure Erase on an Intel SSD, there is no possibility to recover data from the SSD

Backup all data and files you want to save before using the Secure Erase feature.

Is the SSD based on the SATA Interface or PCIe Interface? Unsure? The drive series name is listed on the Summary page, if there is an ‘S’ it is SATA, if a ‘P’ it is PCIe.

PCIe

SATA

The drive you want to erase cannot contain the Operating System.  The data will need to be backed up and installed as a secondary drive for it to be erased.

Does the drive you want to erase have the Operating System installed on it?
Yes
No
Does the drive you want to erase contain any partitions?
Yes
No

Secure Erase can't be done on SSDs that contain any partitions. Follow the instructions for How to create a primary partition using Diskpart before using Secure Erase.

Try the following:

  1. Backup all data.
  2. Format the drive. (This will erase all data on the drive.)
  3. Create a Partition and assign a drive letter. This can be done through Disk Manager.

Step 1: Press the Windows Key + X.
Step 2: Select Disk Management.
Step 3: Locate the disk that you wish to add a partition to.
Step 4: Right-click and select New Simple Volume.

Example from Windows* 10:

Did this resolve the issue?
Yes
No
Unfortunately this functionality is not available in the tool for your configuration/system.

Secure Erase functionality in the Intel® Memory and Storage Tool is not available for SATA devices.
