Why does the avst_source_u_data data interface overflow when using Block floating-point (BFP) compression with the O-RAN FPGA IP?

Environment

  • Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition
  • Interfaces
  • BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
    Description

Due to a problem in the O-RAN FPGA IP,  raw IQ Samples (iSample and qSample) data exponent only supports up to power of 7 in Block floating-point (BFP) compression.

If the exponent is larger,  the avst_source_u_data interface will overflow.

    Resolution

To work around this problem, users should ensure that they scale the raw IQ Sample data to keep the exponent within 7.

This problem is scheduled to be fixed in a future release of the O-RAN FPGA IP.
