Why does Cyclone V SoC not boot from N25Q512 QSPI after reset issued during flash memory command execution?

Environment

    Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition
BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
Description

When the Cyclone® V SoC on the Intel® FPGA Development Kit is reset during the QSPI erase or write command execution, subsequent boots from N25Q512 QSPI flash with Power-On-Reset might fail due to unexpected status received from memory in u-boot initialization.

The N25Q512 QSPI device stays in an unexpected state until board is power cycled or QSPI is reset with software commands. The hardware reset of N25Q512 QSPI does not recover memory to the expected state required by the u-boot driver.

Resolution

The QSPI memory can be recovered with software reset commands (Reset Enable, Reset Memory).

There is no plan to replace Micron's N25Q512 QSPI memory on Cyclone V SoC Intel FPGA Development Kit.
