How can I set the VGA Enable bit to 1 in PCIe Bridge Control register in my root port application, which is using Altera PCIe IP?

Environment

  • PCI Express
  • PCI
  • BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
Description You cannot set the VGA Enable bit to 1 in the PCIe Bridge Control Register.  Table 7-6 in PCI Express Base Specification, Rev 2.0, section 7.5.3.6, provides the bit map for Bridge Control Register.  VGA Enable (bit 3) is not even defined in the PCIe 2.0 Base Specification, hence not required.  Mindshare®  PCI Express System Architecture book further explains that VGA Enable bit in Bridge Control Register should be hard wired to 0.  In Altera® PCIe IP, this bit is hardwired to 0 and is compliant to the specifications.
