Error: Node instance <node name> instantiates undefined entity TRI1

Description

This Quartus® II error message often means that the software is not using the correct Library Mapping File (LMF) when compiling the design. The LMF file maps synthesis tool-specfic primitives such as "TRI1" to Altera® primitives that can be compiled in the Quartus II software.

Ensure that your synthesis tool is correct in the Tool name list on the Design Entry & Synthesis page under EDA Tool Settings on the Settings dialog box (Assignments menu). Setting the Tool name specifies the appropriate LMF file.

If your synthesis tool setting is correct, the error may be due to a problem in the Quartus II software version 4.0. Because of this problem, the Quartus II software may not use the correct LMF file if the design was previously compiled with an incorrect setting. If you compiled your design with a blank or incorrect Tool name under EDA Tool Settings, and then changed the Tool name, the software may not use the new LMF file and you may see errors like the one above.

As a workaround for the problem in the Quartus II software version 4.0, do the following:

  1. Close the Quartus II software
  2. Delete the db directory in your project directory
  3. Open the software and make the appropriate Tool name setting in the EDA Tool Settings (if necessary)
  4. Recompile the design

This problem has been fixed in the Quartus II software version 4.1.
