Can I implement an open-drain output on FLEX® 6000 devices?

Environment

BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
Description Yes. Although the FLEX 6000 device family does not have a dedicated open-drain feature on the I/O pins, open-drain outputs can be implemented using the device's tri-state output on each pin. If the output pin's data line is connected to GND and the design's data line is connected to the tri-state's enable line, the output pin will toggle between ground (logic low) and high impedance (high-Z) depending on the logic level of the enable signal.

The MAX PLUS® II software will implement the open-drain configuration automatically if the OPNDRN primitive is used on the output pin. This emulation is possible because FLEX 6000 devices have one output enable per I/O pin.
