How do I install a "virtual" adapter to install TCP/IP protocol support on my stand-alone computer?

Environment

Description You need to install the TCP/IP protocol for the Quartus software to compile. If your computer is not on a network, or does not have a network card, there is a virtual adapter that can be installed and allows you to install the TCP/IP protocol on your stand-alone computer.

To install the "virtual adapter", do the following:

Windows NT 4.0:

  1. Go to the Control Panel.
  2. Select Network.
  3. Click on the Adapters tab.
  4. Choose the Add button and select MS Loopback Adapter. This virtual Microsoft adapter allows you to install TCP/IP on a PC without a network card or modem. You need the Windows NT 4.0 CD ROM in order to install this driver.
  5. Use the default Frame Type value (802.3) and click OK.
  6. Click on the Protocols tab.
  7. Choose the Add button and select TCP/IP Protocol.
  8. Click Close to exit the window.

Windows 98:

  1. Go to the Control Panel.
  2. Select Network.
  3. Choose the Configurations tab, and click on the Add button.
  4. In the Select Network Component Type window, choose Adapter and click on the Add button.
  5. In the Select Network Adapters window, choose:
    Manufacturer: Microsoft
    Network Adapters: MS Virtual Private Networking Adapter, and click on OK.
  6. Now that you are back in the Configurations tab, click on the Add button again.
  7. In the Select Network Component Type window, choose Protocol, and Click on the Add button.
  8. In the Select Network Protocol window, choose:
    Manufacturer: Microsoft
    Network Protocols: TCP/IP and click on OK.
  9. Click OK to exit the window.
