Why does my BeMicroSDK board fail to function when plugged into a USB3.0 (USB3) port?

Environment

BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
Description

There is an issue with the BeMicroSDK board where the prom has a wrong file version. This issue is only seen if the BeMicroSDK board is plugged into a USB3 port. There are no reported issues with using the BeMicroSDK board with a USB2.0 (USB2) port.

When plugging the BeMicroSDK board into a USB3 port the failing message occurs immediately after you plug in the board. In the Device Manager it will show a red X and a pop-up will state "Unknown Device inserted in USB slot".

Resolution

1)      Download the FTDI utility called FT_PROG.  This utility allows you to read/write the EEPROM on the board.

http://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Utilities/FT_Prog_v2.4.2.zip

2)      Launch the program FT_PROG.exe, then press F5 or in the menu select, Devices => Scan & Parse

3)      After scanning, you will find the Device Output field has the value BE02. Example: Screenshot

4)      The next step is to Apply Template from a file, by Right-Clicking Device: 0 as shown in this screenshot.  Download and use the .xml file here.

5)      Next, using the same Right-Click menu above, select Program Device.  Upon the next ‘refresh’ you will see the above field changed to BE12.

Your BeMicroSDK board should now will now work in a USB3 port.
