Why does the SignalTap II Logic Analyzer indicate "not compatible with device" after downloading the .sof successfully?

Description

Due to a problem in the Quartus® II software version 10.0 and later, the SignalTap™ II Logic Analyzer may report this error message after you successfully download the SRAM Object File (.sof) to your device.  The device selection field in the SignalTap II Logic Analyzer may switch from the target device to the first device in the JTAG chain.

To work around this problem, reselect the correct target device after downloading the .sof.

This problem is fixed beginning with the Quartus II software version 11.0.
