Why do some .pof files generated by the Quartus II software end in FDh?

Environment

BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
Description

Some .pof files generated by the Quartus® II software will append the end of the programming file with FDh if the Quartus II project has the configuration device set to EPC1.

Resolution

If you are seeing issues with 3rd party programmers handling this extra byte,  set the configuration device for your project to "Auto".

Once your project is set to "Auto" and you recompile, the Quartus II software will generate a .pof file without the FDh byte.
