A silent install provides a method of installing system drivers and software for the corresponding Intel® Wireless Adapters without user intervention.

Note The following information is intended for IT administrators, resellers, and integrators. An advanced level of knowledge in information technology is assumed. The information is not intended for use by individual end users.

Silent installation process overview

The silent installation process can be used to:

  • Install the driver only
  • Install both the Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software and the driver

Driver only
When installing only the driver, the Microsoft* DIFx process is used. An application called IProDifX.exe installs and uninstalls the miniport NDIS driver. IProDifX.exe and the corresponding IProDifX.dll have the appropriate entries to perform the installation. This program works only for Intel® Network Adapters. When the IProDifX application is run after canceling the PnP hardware wizard, the program installs the drivers. The PnP dialog displays when the hardware is inserted into a system with an operating system without a currently installed appropriate Intel® wireless LAN device. After the driver is copied onto the system, the application triggers a rescan of the PCI bus to identify if a card is present and then installs the driver automatically.

Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software and driver
When installing both the Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software and the driver, the Microsoft Windows* Installer package (.MSI) with the command line options is used. The .MSI package is suitable to be launched directly to install the driver or driver with application in the Enterprise environment via GPO updates.

Setup.exe sits in front of the .MSI and will launch the PROSet .MSI with the command line parameters selected. Each setup.exe must reside in the same folders as the files that it is installing.

To use the silent installation switches, you need to download the zip files from Download Center.

Silent installation steps

Driver only
  1. Place DPInst.exe, IProDifX.exe, IProDifX.dll, and the Intel® PRO/Wireless Driver file in the same folder on the system.
  2. From the command line, browse to the subdirectory where the IProDifX.exe file is located.
  3. From the command line, type IProDifX.exe /Silent.
  4. Reboot the system.

IProDifX command line options

  • /Help - Displays the help message
  • /Silent - Installs or upgrades the driver silently
  • /Install - Installs the driver with a user interface (UI) - default option
  • /Remove - Removes the currently installed driver
  • /Reinstall - Reinstalls the current driver
  • /INFClear - Clears old INF files from system

Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software and driver

Use of command line options is accepted by both the setup.exe and the msi.
For example, to silently install the default features, run:

setup /qn

or

MSIEXEC /i "<Path to MSI>\Intel PROSet Wireless.msi" /qn

Note The default for setup.exe is “/i ”. Therefore, “/i ” should never be used as a command line option for setup.exe or within the <MSI> tags of the setup.xml. If you directly install the msi file using msiexec, you must define “/i ”.

The table below describes install options with .MSI.

Option/Parameter Meaning
/qn Silent installation - no dialogs are displayed
/qb Basic user interface - dialogs are limited to progress meters and error prompts
/qf Full user interface - this is the default
/x Uninstall all features
Property Meaning
REBOOT Suppresses reboot of the system after installation
Values for use with REBOOT: Force, Suppress, ReallySuppress

The feature/component installed can be customized by appending the ADDLOCAL on the command line.

Examples:

Silent install of PROSet with option to add SSO and no reboot:
msiexec /i "<path to MSI>\Intel PROSet Wireless.msi" /qn ADDLOCAL=WIFI_Driver,WIFI_SSO REBOOT=ReallySuppress

Uninstall just one component after Intel® PROSet Wireless is installed:
msiexec /i "<path to MSI>\Intel PROSet Wireless.msi" /qn REMOVE=WIFI_Software

Note:

  • All of the feature names are case sensitive.
  • ADDLOCAL - features available are listed in the tables below. Items must be separated by a comma with no spaces between options.

The tables below describe the Wi-Fi Feature Tree for ADDLOCAL using .msi.
