Unable to Run Secure Erase on Intel® SSD Toolbox

Note This information only applies to Windows 7* systems. Windows 8*/8.1* and Windows® 10 operating systems block Secure Erase functionality through the Intel® Toolbox.

 

The Intel® SSD Toolbox user guide states that after plugging the SSD data cable in and clicking Refresh, Secure Erase can be started.

If the system BIOS is set to AHCI, the following error can occur: ATA Security is enabled. Secure Erase cannot run until security is disabled.

To resolve the issue:

  1. Make sure you have installed Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST).
  2. In Windows 7*, click Start, click Run, type "services.msc" and then click Enter.
  3. Change Intel® Rapid Storage Technology settings from Automatic (delay) to Automatic.
  4. Reboot the system.
  5. Run Secure Erase on the Intel SSD Toolbox. The refresh rate should be faster when you plug in the SSD.
