Note1 We offer an optimized graphics pipeline for vertex shader processing included in DirectX*. Games for software (SW) vertex shader processing use this graphics pipeline.
Graphics API Information
  • DirectX*

    DirectX* is a set of application programming interfaces (APIs) for games and multimedia applications. Some DirectX components require graphics driver support to function properly and provide the best gaming performance.

  • OpenGL*

    Open Graphics Library* (OpenGL*) is an application programming interface (API) for 3-D graphics used by many games. OpenGL enables hardware acceleration of 3-D graphics. For optimum performance, you need support from the graphics driver.

  • OpenCL*

    Open Computing Language* (OpenCL*) is a cross-architecture, cross-operating system, open standard, heterogeneous parallel programming environment. OpenCL allows the applications to target processors, graphics processing units (GPUs), embedded processors, digital signal processors (DSPs), and other available compute resources in a system.

Determining Graphics API Information

To determine which API version your system currently supports:

  • For 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ Processors with Intel® Iris® Graphics or Intel® HD Graphics and newer graphics products
    1. Open your Intel® Graphics Control Panel (shortcut: press Ctrl+Alt+F12)
    2. Navigate to Options > Information Center
    3. Observe the values listed for: Installed DirectX* Version, Supported DirectX* Version, OpenGL* Version, OpenCL* Version, and Shader Version
    Note The installed DirectX* Version is the highest version supported by the driver. It may not match with the Supported DirectX* Version. The Supported DirectX* Version shows which version your system supports. Keep in mind that DirectX* is backwards compatible and support all features present in earlier versions.


    The relevant fields as they appear in the Intel® HD Graphics Control Panel via Information Center.

  • For 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ Processors with Intel® HD Graphics and older:
    • Determining DirectX* Version

      Get DirectX* information using one of two methods:

      1. Intel® Graphics Control Panel Method
        1. Open your Intel® Graphics Control Panel. (shortcut: press Ctrl+Alt+F12)
        2. Navigate to Options > Information Center.
        3. Observe the values listed for DirectX* Version.

      2. DxDiag* Method:
        1. Start > Run > dxdiag.
        2. Observe the 'DirectX Version' listed.

    • Determining OpenGL* Version
      Note In some old versions of the Intel® Graphics Control Panel (Intel® GCP), the OpenGL Version is stated in the Information Center alongside DirectX* information. The Intel® Graphics and Media Control Panel functionality does not exist in the Intel® GCP version.

      3rd Party Software Method

      With older graphics drivers/products, you must use a third-party tool to determine the OpenGL* version installed and supported on your system. Two such utilities are glview* and gpu-z*. Follow the instructions provided on their websites to determine your supported OpenGL* version.

    • Determining OpenCL* Version
      Note OpenCL* was officially released with the 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ Processors. Use the latest driver provided for these, and newer products. Follow the instructions for newer Intel® products stated at the top of the page for determining your OpenCL* Version.
