No Boot Processor and Memory Issues for Intel® Desktop Boards

No boot situations can cause issues with either the processor or the memory.

Incompatible or overheating processors
Check the Intel® Processors and Boards Compatibility Tool to be sure the new processor is compatible with your board. If the processor is compatible, try removing and reinstalling it to make sure it is installed correctly. The compatibility tool also tells you if the new processor requires a specific desktop board version or a specific BIOS version.

If the processor overheats, the system will not boot, or the overheating causes the computer to shut down shortly after booting. Check for the following:

  • The fans on the processor are connected properly and running.
  • Thermal interface material or the thermal grease is applied to the processor properly.
  • The power supply fan and any other external case fans are running properly.
  • Air intakes for the external fans are unobstructed, and are at least several inches away from walls and other items.

Memory issues
Various memory issues can cause no boot situations:

  • Go to Tested Memory to find the memory list for your board. If the memory installed is listed as compatible, remove and reinstall the memory, making sure the memory is fully seated in the slots.
  • Some desktop boards require you to populate the memory slots in a certain order. See the Technical Product Specification for your desktop board.
  • One, two, or three beeps at boot can indicate defective memory, causing a boot failure. To isolate a specific memory module as defective, boot the computer with just one memory module installed at a time.
