What is TRIM?

TRIM is an attribute of the ATA Data Set Management Command. The TRIM function improves compatibility, endurance, and performance by allowing the drive to do garbage collection in the background. This collection eliminates blocks of data, such as deleted files.

How do I use TRIM?

The following operating systems (OS) have the TRIM command enabled by default:

  • Windows 7*
  • Windows 8*
  • Windows 8.1*
  • Windows® 10
  • Windows Server 2008*
  • Windows Server 2012*
  • Windows Server 2016*

For TRIM to function:

  • Both the SSD and operating system must support TRIM
  • The operating system must have TRIM enabled
Note Only SSDs with drive lithography of 34 nm (G2) or newer support the TRIM command. 50 nm SSDs do not support TRIM.
What are the requirements for TRIM?
  • An Intel® Solid State Drive (Intel® SSD), with drive lithography of 34 nm (G2) or newer.
  • Installation of the Intel Memory and Storage Tool.
  • Disable scheduled defragmentation to avoid background defragmentation running at the same time as the Intel SSD Optimizer.
  • Disable the SuperFetch (or SysMain on Win10) feature.
Is TRIM supported on RAID configuration?

Yes. Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) version 11.0 or greater supports TRIM functionality in RAID 0, beginning with the Intel® 7 Series Chipset.

The latest version of the Intel Memory and Storage Tool enables you to optimize the performance of an Intel SSD. You can also use a recent version of Windows* or Linux*, that automatically enables TRIM.

How do I check to see if the drive supports TRIM?

You can use the Intel® Memory and Storage Tool to view the drive attributes:

  1. Open the Intel® Memory and Storage Tool.
  2. Click Drive Details under the Feature drop down
  3. Click Export.
  4. Save the .csv file and open it in an appropriate tool, such as Microsoft Office Excel*.
  5. Find Word 169 and check the value for Bit 0 - Data Set Management Supported.
  • If the Hex Value is 1, the drive supports TRIM.
  • If the Hex Value is 0, the drive does not support TRIM1.

1 The 34 nm series Intel® SSD drives with firmware 02G9 show the Hex Value as 0 because this firmware version does not support TRIM.

Note If the drive does not support TRIM, check to see if a firmware update with this feature is available.
How do I know I've enabled TRIM?

You can check the operating system to see if you have TRIM enabled:

  1. Open a Command Prompt as Administrator.

    1. Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories.
    2. Right-click Command Prompt and click Run as Administrator.
  2. At the prompt, type %root%:\>fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify.

    Example: C:\>fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify

DisableDeleteNotify = 1 (Windows TRIM commands are disabled)
DisableDeleteNotify = 0 (Windows TRIM commands are enabled)
