Memory and storage are like real estate in a thriving urban core. The closer memory is to the CPU, the more expensive and limited in capacity it is. This memory—often DRAM—also lacks permanence. Should a CPU lose power, the memory within will “forget” the data it holds.

As we develop new memory and storage technologies, we integrate them tightly into our other platform components. For example, Intel® Optane™ persistent memory was codesigned to work optimally with our CPUs. From creating new protocols on the memory bus to making changes inside the core and BIOS, our high level of platform integration helps ensure reliability, performance, and security.
Hardware innovations become revolutionary only when developers and architects can understand how to get the most value from them. Realizing that our new approach to memory would fundamentally change infrastructure and software design, we worked with the ecosystem for roughly five years before launching Intel® Optane™ persistent memory.
Intel worked with major software, hypervisor, and middleware providers like VMware to recode platforms to take advantage of persistent memory. We also launched an open, industry-wide persistent memory programming model, as well as the Intel® Optane™ Persistent Memory Development Kit and other tools, to further enable developers.
