Why do I get an "Out of Memory in module Quartus.exe" when trying to program a 1GB flash using the Quartus II programmer?

Environment

  • Quartus® II Subscription Edition
  • BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
    Description

The Quartus® II Programmer may generate this error when you try to program a 1G bit flash, because programming this device requires more than 2 GB of system memory.

Altera recommends using the 64-bit versions of Windows and the Quartus II software to increase the available memory to more than 2 GB. Refer to the Related Solution below for information about how to use  64-bit Altera Software.

By default, 32-bit versions of Windows limits processes to 2 GB of memory. If you are using a 32-bit version of Windows and have more than 2 GB of system memory, you can edit the boot.ini file to allow up to 3 GB of memory per process. Refer to the Related Solution below for information about how to allocate more than 2 GB of memory in 32-bit Windows.

Refer to the Quartus II Software Support for High Memory Use Designs web page for more information
