Can I directly connect (DC-couple) TMDS or LVPECL devices with Altera transceivers?

Environment

  • HDMI Intel® FPGA IP
  • BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
    Description

No, you cannot directly connect (DC-couple) TMDS or LVPECL devices with Altera® transceivers.

The common mode voltage of TMDS and LVPECL devices are electrically incompatible with Altera transceivers. To interface TMDS or LVPECL devices with Altera transceivers you should AC couple your link and re-bias the signal to the common mode voltage (Vcm) expected by the receiver.

    • The Altera receiver can be biased either externally or with the on-chip termination and biasing circuit.
    • The TMDS or LVPECL receiver should be biased according to the 3rd party device datasheet.

For further information on Altera transciever electrical specifications refer to the appropriate device datasheet.

You should perform signal integrity analysis on your link to verify the performance meets your system requirements.
