Why does the Deinterlacer II IP Core of Intel® FPGA Video and Image Processing Suite in Motion Adaptive mode exhibit sub-optimal motion tracking, resulting in weaving artifacts in video sequences with different motion over different parts of the frame?

Environment

  • Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition
  • Deinterlacer II (4K HDR passthrough) Intel® FPGA IP
  • BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
    Description

Due to a problem with the Intel® Quartus® Prime software versions 18.0 and earlier, you may encounter the above problem when using Deinterlacer II IP Core of Intel® FPGA Video and Image Processiong Suite in Motion Adaptive mode without selecting 3:2 & 2:2 detector when using video over film configurations.

    Resolution

To work around this problem in the Intel® Quartus® Prime software versions 18.0 and earlier, you can enable the cadence detection and reverse pulldown. Then, select 3:2 & 2:2 detector with video over film algorithm.

This problem has been fixed starting in the Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition version 18.1 software.
