DSP Builder Installation and Licensing FAQ

The following are frequently asked questions about DSP Builder software installation and licensing.

Q. Where can I download DSP Builder?
A. You can download DSP Builder from the Download DSP Builder web page.

Q. What OS is supported by DSP Builder?
A. The current version of DSP Builder supports both Linux and Windows operating systems.

Q. What version of Simulink is required for DSP Builder?
A. The version of Simulink required depends on the version of DSP Builder you have. Please refer to the DSP Builder Introduction Handbook (PDF).

Q. What version of Quartus Prime software is required for DSP Builder?
A. The version of Quartus Prime software required depends on the version of DSP Builder you have. Please refer to the DSP Builder Introduction Handbook (PDF).

Q. How do I install DSP Builder?
A. You can find instructions on how to install DSP Builder in the Installing DSP Builder section in the DSP Builder Introduction Handbook (PDF).

Q. Do I need a license file to use DSP Builder?
A. You must obtain a license for DSP Builder to enable conversion from MDL to HDL and Tcl script generation.

Q. How do I purchase fully licensed DSP Builder software?
A. You can purchase a license through your myAltera account (Self-Service Licensing Center) or you may contact your local Altera representative.

Q. When I try to request a DSP development kit license from the Altera Software Licensing web page, it asks for my NIC ID and Altera ID. Where do I get this information?
A. When you order a DSP development kit that includes DSP Builder, make sure that the network identification card (NIC) ID provided with the order is for the computer on which the development kit software and DSP Builder is to be installed. If you do not provide the correct NIC ID, you cannot automatically download your development kit software license from Altera's website. If you need to provide an updated NIC ID for your license file, you can submit a mySupport service request to arrange it.

Q. Why hasn't my license file arrived by email yet?
A. Although most license files are sent a few minutes after they are requested, it may take up to 24 hours for you to receive a license file after requesting it. You will not receive the license file if you entered an incorrect email address.

Q. How do I set up a license?
A. You can find instructions about how to set up your DSP Builder license in the Set Up Licensing section in the DSP Builder Introduction Handbook (PDF).

Q. How do I troubleshoot a DSP Builder licensing problem?
A. There are several resources available to help troubleshoot licensing problems, including:

Q. What should I do when my license expires?
A. Subscription customers can continue using software after expiration but will no longer be able to install new software releases. By purchasing a renewal subscription, you can receive all of the latest software updates for an additional 12 months.

Q. Can I transfer my license to another computer or co-worker?
A. You can submit a mySupport service request to arrange this.

Q. How do I know if my license enables DSP Builder?
A. You can determine the software your license enables by checking in the license file. Lines beginning with FEATURE or INCREMENT list the software enabled by the license. For DSP Builder, the feature line required starts with C4D5_512A. For more information on your license file, refer to AN 340: Altera Software Licensing (PDF).

Q. The Simulink Library Browser does not show the Altera MegaCore IP library. How do I resolve this?
A. After installing DSP Builder, perform the following steps in MATLAB:

  1. Start MATLAB.
  2. Run the set-up script by typing the following at the MATLAB prompt:
