wildcard characters Definition

Characters used to represent one or more characters of a node or group name. You can use wildcard characters to find a node with the Node Finder, or to create timing assignments and some Fitter assignments with the Assignment Editor.

You can type one or more wildcard characters in the Show assignments for specific nodes list or in the spreadsheet of the Assignment Editor to represent one or more characters of the node name(s) you want to assign. You can also type one or more wildcard characters in the Named box of the Node Finder to represent one or more characters of the node name(s) you want to find.

Character

Description

*

Denotes zero or more characters. For example, foo* denotes all nodes with names beginning with "foo" followed by zero or more characters. If you type foo* in the Name box, the assignment is made to all nodes with names beginning with "foo" for which the assignment is legal. If you type only an asterisk (*), the assignment is made to all nodes for which the assignment is legal.

?

Denotes a single character. For example, f? denotes only nodes with names beginning with the letter f that are followed by any one other character. If you type f? in the Name box, the assignment is made only to all nodes with names beginning with the letter "f" that are followed by any one other character.

Note:

Wildcard characters are legal assignment characters in timing assignments and some Fitter assignments. Wildcard characters are also legal for point-to-point Global Signal logic option assignments in MAX® II devices and Global Signal and Decrease Input Delay to Internal Cells logic option assignments for supported device ( MAX® II and Stratix® IV) family devices.
