GBase 8m is an in memory database targeted for high throughput and low latency OnLine Transaction Processing (OLTP) scenarios. This test workload is developed by GBase  – it simulates an Online Charging System (OCS) that is used in telecom applications for performance benchmarks.

Challenges

Customers experience a capacity bottleneck due to limited, affordable main memory options available today. Since memory needs to be allocated for each online account, GBase is not able to store the desired number of accounts in-memory (and is therefore capped on throughput).  Adding additional memory requires scaling out, which is often cost-prohibitive.

Solution

  • Intel® Optane™ DC persistent memory (Memory Mode) delivers significantly larger, affordable memory capacities, in a single system, which reduces the need to scale out and therefore reduces cost.
  • With more memory, greater number of online accounts can be stored in memory, thereby enabling the system to process greater throughput i.e., more transactions per second (see chart for performance improvement)123.

Value

Better performance at similar cost - GBase customers will benefit from being able to store more online accounts per server, thereby reducing hardware footprint.  In addition, throughput is also improved at comparable cost, and while meeting SLA targets for the response time.
