An open solution for retail, manufacturing and industrial systems that combines an IoT Platform with integrated computer vision and multi-application provisioning. The solution supports local analytics and decision making, a range of use-cases, as well as cloud-based application provisioning that simplifies application life-cycle management for edge deployments. Value Proposition A flexible, open solution that simplifies the connection and management of different data sources (e.g. point of sale hardware, RFID scanners, weight scales and smart cameras, barcode readers, digital signage) and applications in a retail other environments Reduces integration costs and time to market for new retail solution Ingest, normalize, aggregate and analyze device and sensor data and respond to results in real-time Supports a range of retail-focused use cases including people counting, line estimation, shift management, stock control and point-of-sales Simplifies application deployment management (update, start, stop, pause, resume) and enables monitoring of edge applications and devices Extensible solution that enables a system to evolve as additional retail capabilities are deployed The fusion of sensor data enabled by the solution allows an existing retail system to be easily extended to support additional retail capabilities while protection existing investments. By leveraging the Open IoT Edge Platform RRK it is now possible to create data-driven retail solutions that augment rather than replace, existing assets. For example, these capabilities were successfully used as the foundation of the Intel ® Open Retail Initiative Loss Prevention demonstration at NRF 2020. Key Components Intel® component: Intel® Core™ i3, i5, & i7, Intel® Xeon® E and Intel® Pentium® Processors, Intel® Celeron®, and Intel® Distribution of OpenVINO™ Toolkit OS Support: Ubuntu, Suse CSP: Private/On-Premises Software: IOTech’s Edge Xpert IoT Platform & Spirit Edge Management Solution Hardware: Dell Optiplex XE3 and 3930 Rack Workstation, HP MP9 Retail Server At its core the RRK utilizes IOTech’s Edge Xpert platform, a commercial implementation of the Linux Foundation’s EdgeX Foundry a vendor-neutral open source project building a common open framework for IoT edge computing. The solution supports local analytics and decision making, a range of use-cases, as well as cloud-based application provisioning that simplifies application life-cycle management in retail and other use cases. Edge Xpert enables the integration of a range of retail devices from multiple different vendors. This includes point of sale hardware, RFID scanners, weight scales and smart cameras that can be easily added to the system to create an integrated solution for retail. Edge Xpert is used to merge all the available data at the edge in order to create a single operational picture which in turn can support multiple use cases using the same data sets. For example, the solution can be used to support Loss Prevention in a store to help combat both accidental and fraudulent loss at a self-checkout. Device data is data is collected in real-time and fed into the analytics applications which are monitoring the data to capture events and report anomalies. Monitoring at the point of sale is achieved by providing out-of-the-box ONVIF camera integration and the Intel® OpenVINO™ Toolkit for advanced vision and AI. Notifications of any suspicious events generated by the AI can be automatically sent in real-time to an employee who can take required action without necessarily interrupting the customer checkout process. The ability to easily deploy new applications (both containerized and native applications) and update existing applications, while providing monitoring for applications and edge devices is provided by IOTech’s Spirit Edge Management solution. Spirit can be used in both Cloud hosted and on-premise configurations. The solution is available on a choice of powerful but cost effective edge hardware from either HP and Dell suitable for retail applications.
