Electrification ecosystems are rapidly transforming from monolithic, one-way generation and distribution systems, to become highly integrated, multi-source operations. These ‘virtual power plants’ broker power from distributed sources and are able to utilize dynamic, market-based pricing. The technology and solutions to enable such an ecosystem now exist in the form of the Pratexo Edge Platform as a Service, hosting its highly-customizable Intelligent Grid Solution. Originally developed for Norwegian power grid operator Hallingdal Kraftnett and now being extended in coordination with industry leaders including ABB, Pratexo brings the benefits of cloud computing down to the energy grid ‘edge’ where data is local, secure, and can be used with low latency to both detect and predict problem situation and to react in real time. The benefits of this solution include increased system uptime, improved ability to handle peak load demand, greater resistance to external attacks, and dramatically reduced costs versus attempting to store and process all grid data in central clouds.
