Post CMOS
In the coming decade, Intel® silicon process technologies will approach the physical limits of atomic structure. At atomic limits, thermal effects will eventually limit how far we can scale silicon-based transistors.
Researchers predict that alternative technologies will be necessary if Moore's Law is to continue beyond the 2020 time frame. Some of the alternative technologies being investigated are quantum computing, spintronics, interference devices and optical switches. At this time, this is very long-term research. All of these technologies are highly speculative, but if any were to materialize, we would expect to integrate them heterogeneously onto silicon.
