Intel’s proof-of-concept Radio Network Controller (RNC) is designed to support up to 500,000 users with high-speed data throughput of up to 555 mbps. This is accomplished with just a single AdvancedTCA* chassis and 12 blades based on Intel processors and Intel NetStructure® Solutions. It is a fully manageable carrier-grade system with a high level of built-in redundancy, including spare fans and power supplies, spare blades for all functions, and a spare management module—all with redundant links. It is supported with a carrier-grade Linux operating system, and high-availability middleware for uninterrupted service delivery.
This RNC proof-of-concept also provides a model that can be applied to other network elements in the wireless infrastructure. The same basic design can be scaled and adapted to support SGSN, GGSN and other network requirements.
