In this paper we look at risk from the total supply chain perspective with the realization that
there are inherent risks at every stage of the supply chain. Although we cannot control all the
risks, we may put methods and tools in place to help mitigate risks, especially in the areas that
require the most focus. We outline effective tools used at Intel to reduce risks in the supplier
sourcing process, prevent the risk of business interruption, and moderate risks related to currency
fluctuations in the capital equipment purchasing process. We conclude by demonstrating how risk
management may be applied across a diverse organization, in this case Logistics, resulting in not
only risk mitigation, but also in a continual cycle of process improvements, increased efficiency,
and cost savings.
