Independent living technologies have tremendous potential to facilitate the study of aging and chronic disease. In this article we review the areas in which independent living technologies can provide significantly improved research data, and the challenges that must be overcome to effectively gather those data. We propose approaches, both technical and procedural, which enable efficient management of large-scale research studies, and we discuss scalability issues and their possible solutions.
